Falmouth School Challenged to Design a Ride for Flambards
Published: 23rd June 201524 children from local School Falmouth Primary Academy, visited Flambards, Helston this week - not just to try the rides.
As part of their school curriculum the year 5 class are studying Fairground Attraction, and visited Flambards Theme Park to learn all about the rides.
Following their research day at Flambards children will return to the classroom armed with a challenge. The special project will be to design and build their own rides, which will be judged by Head Engineer Mark Cooper, and Manager Richard Smith.
Manager, Richard Smith says: “We were delighted to invite Falmouth Primary Academy to Flambards to meet our expert engineers and learn all about how rides work, and of course to try out all the rides!”
He continues: “We are keen to encourage children learn more about engineering, to use their imagination and to be hands-on designing and building, offering them a spark of ingenuity to pursue engineering later in their scholastic careers.
Head Engineer, Mark Cooper, explained to the children how the rides and their safety mechanisms worked. The group were given some basic diagrams to get them started with explanations of how hydraulics, pulleys and gears worked and were integrated into Flambards many rides and attractions.
Armed with the knowledge of how the rides were able to perform the children road-tested all the rides, experiencing an adrenaline rush from the Carousel, to Thunderbolt, SkyRaker, Hornet Roller Coaster and finally the great new ride for this year Sky Swinger.
Class Teacher, Mrs Mitchell says: “It was a fantastic opportunity to visit Flambards. The children have learned a great deal about engineering fairground attractions, inspiring their own design and build project.
She continues: “It is useful for the different learners to see diagrams, listen to the engineering team at Flambards and to have a go on the rides, this all helps them to understand how it all works. It will no doubt help with their project! We are looking forward to welcoming Mark and Richard to the school to see their achievements.”
